Air Conditioning vs Heat Pumps: What’s the Difference?

If you’re looking to improve comfort within your home or business, then you’ll have likely come across both air conditioning and heat pumps. Whilst both can look very similar and use relatively similar technologies, they do have different purposes.

In this guide we are going to explore the differences between air conditioning and heat pumps to help you determine what’s best for your property.

Air Conditioning Explained

Air conditioning units are widely known to cool your home, but did you know many of them can actually heat rooms too?

Air conditioning units operate by taking heat from inside your home via refrigerant and transferring it outside, leaving you with cooled rooms. With reverse cycle air conditioning units however, you can reverse the flow, meaning they heat your home as well as cool it down.

During Summer Months – Extract Heat From your Home

During Winter Months – Extract Heat From outside air and bring it indoors

Because of this, air conditioning isn’t just for cooling, but can also offer year round climate control all from one system.

Air conditioning units are best suited for:

  • Properties that require both heating and cooling
  • Bedrooms, loft conversions and open plan rooms
  • Properties that don’t require full central heating upgrades

Heat Pump Explained

Heat pumps are great for both heating and cooling your property, much like an air conditioning system, however they work by transferring heat rather than generating it.

  • During winter they extract heat from outside air and brings it into your home.
  • During summer they work in reverse to cool your home

There are two types of heat pumps…

Air-to-air heat pumps – These work very similarly to air conditioning units by delivering heated or cooled air to rooms.

Air-to-water heat pumps – These are designed for central heating, radiators and hot water.

In fact, many air conditioning units are technically air-to-air heat pumps, which is where most of the confusion comes from.

Air Conditioning vs Heat Pump: Head-to-head

What they do:

Both heat pumps and air conditioning units can provide heating and cooling to your property. However, whilst air conditioning units are usually used as a secondary form of heating, heat pumps are regarded as a heating system.

  • Air Con – Primarily for cooling
  • Heat Pump – Full heating (and cooling) solution

Purpose:

Air conditioning units are typically installed to provide cooling and additional heating to certain rooms while heat pumps are installed to heat your whole property.

  • Air Con – Room by room control
  • Heat Pump – Whole home system

Efficiency:

Heat pumps are often known for being extremely efficient because they move heat rather than creating it, often generating more energy than they consume.

Air conditioning is also highly efficient, particularly when used for both heating and cooling.

How they are installed:

Air conditioning units can be installed in almost any room with minimum fuss while heat pump installations will take much longer.

Heat pumps (especially air-to-water units) often require you to upgrade your radiators and insulation.

Pricing:

Air conditioning systems will typically be less expensive up front while heat pumps require more initial investment.

Heat pumps however do save you money on energy bills in the long run, and there are currently UK government grants that will help towards the cost of installing a heat pump.

Environmental Factors:

Heat pumps are generally considered the more environmentally friendly option as they heat your home using renewable heat from the air and can significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Air conditioning systems are also becoming more efficient and eco-friendly. Especially newer models with low-energy consumption and improved refrigerants.

Air Conditioning or Heat Pump: Which Should I choose?

So air conditioning or heat pump? Ultimately the decision will come down to your property and your personal heating and cooling requirements.

If you:

  • Need to cool rooms in the summer months
  • Would benefit from some extra heating in the winter
  • Are looking for an affordable and flexible system
  • Want the units installed quickly with minimal disruption

Then air conditioning is right for you.

But if you…

  • Need a new heating system for your home
  • Want heating throughout your entire property
  • Are looking to save on energy bills in the long run
  • Have a property that would benefit from system upgrades

Then you’ll be better off with a heat pump.

Can I Have Air Conditioning and a Heat Pump?

Yes of course, and many people do. Installing air conditioning units in specific rooms can provide you with great flexibility when it comes to heating and cooling, and you could then install a heat pump to deal with your central heating and hot water.

Alternatively, a modern air conditioning system (air-to-air heat pump) can offer both heating and cooling from one efficient unit, making it a popular choice for many UK homes.
