Air Conditioning Installation Cost in Bristol and Bath: 2026 Price Guide

How Much Does Air Conditioning Installation Cost in Bristol and Bath?

Air conditioning installation cost is the first thing most people in Bristol and Bath ask us about, and it is a fair question. You want a rough number before you book a survey. The honest answer is that it depends on your property, but that does not mean you have to guess.

This guide gives you realistic 2026 price ranges, explains what pushes a quote up or down, and covers the grants, VAT rules and planning changes that could save you money. It is written for homeowners, landlords and business owners across Bristol, Bath, Swindon and Gloucester.

Key takeaways

  • A single room wall mounted system is the most common home install and usually lands between £1,500 and £3,000 fitted.
  • The number of rooms, the size of each room, pipe run length and access are the biggest drivers of your air conditioning installation cost.
  • Since April 2026, some homes can get £2,500 off an air to air heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, if the rules are met.
  • Most home systems that heat as well as cool no longer need planning permission in England. Listed buildings and parts of Bath are the main exceptions.
  • By law, anyone working on the refrigerant side of your system must hold F-Gas qualifications.
  • The only way to get an exact price is a survey. Ours is free and comes with no obligation.

Typical air conditioning installation cost by system type

Published UK price guides give a good starting point. Checkatrade’s Bristol listing puts a typical home install between £1,472 and £2,833, with an average of £2,033. Its national guide prices a standard 12,000 BTU wall mounted system at about £750 for the unit and about £1,150 for fitting. Wider 2026 guides place two room systems at roughly £2,800 to £4,500, three to four room systems at £3,500 to £7,000, and ducted whole home systems at £6,000 to £15,000. 11 Air Conditioning Installation Services in Bristol | Browse Tradespeople +2

These are guide ranges, not our price list. Your own quote could sit below or above them once we have seen the property.

What is included in the price

A proper quote for air conditioning installation should cover more than the box on the wall. Check that yours includes:

  • The indoor and outdoor units
  • Pipework, cabling, trunking and wall brackets
  • Condensate drainage, and a pump if one is needed
  • Electrical connection
  • Refrigerant charging, testing and commissioning
  • A walkthrough of the controls and basic care
  • Warranty details

If one quote looks much cheaper than the rest, this list is usually where the gap is hiding.

What Affects Your Air Conditioning Installation Cost?

Two homes on the same street can get very different quotes. Here is why.

Number of rooms and system type

Each room you want to heat or cool normally needs its own indoor unit. You can pair every indoor unit with its own outdoor unit, or run several from one outdoor unit with a multi split. A multi split saves outside space but costs more than a single system. Our guide on how to choose the right air conditioning unit explains the options in more detail.

Room size and the power you need

Bigger rooms need more powerful units, and more powerful units cost more. A unit that is too small will run flat out and still struggle. One that is too big will cost more than it should and switch on and off too often.

Room size (approx.)Typical unit sizeCommon use
Up to 20 m²2.5 kWBedroom, home office
20 to 30 m²3.5 kWLarge bedroom, lounge
30 to 45 m²5 kWOpen plan kitchen diner
45 to 60 m²7 kWLarge open plan space, small shop

This table is a rule of thumb only. South facing glass, loft rooms, high ceilings and heat from equipment can all push the size up, which is why we measure on site.

Pipe runs, access and your property type

The further the indoor unit sits from the outdoor unit, the more pipe, labour and materials are needed. Outdoor units at height, thick stone walls and tricky access all add time.

Older and listed homes in Bath

Bath’s Georgian terraces are beautiful, but solid stone walls and strict rules on what can be seen from the street can limit where units go. That often means longer pipe runs or a more careful route, which adds to the air conditioning installation cost. See our air conditioning services in Bath page for local help.

Flats and apartments

In a flat you may need the freeholder’s written consent before anything goes on an outside wall. Outdoor unit positions are limited too. It is worth checking your lease before you ask for quotes.

Brand and features

We supply Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Midea and Samsung. Premium models cost more up front but tend to be quieter and more efficient. Extras like Wi-Fi control, air purifying filters and very quiet night modes also add to the price. If low bills matter most to you, read our post on energy efficient air conditioning solutions.

Domestic vs Commercial Air Conditioning Installation Cost

Homes and workplaces are priced in different ways. A home job is usually a set number of rooms. A commercial job depends on how many people use the space, how much heat the equipment gives off, and when the work can be done.

DomesticCommercial

We fit domestic air conditioning in houses, flats and garden rooms. Our commercial air conditioning work covers offices, shops, restaurants, hotels and healthcare settings. Where we can, we plan commercial installs around your opening hours so you do not lose trade. You can see examples on our case studies page.

Grants, VAT and Rules That Change Your Air Conditioning Installation Cost

A few rule changes in the last two years can have a real effect on what you pay.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Modern air conditioning is an air to air heat pump. It cools in summer and heats in winter. Ofgem’s scheme guidance now lists £2,500 off the cost and installation of an air to air heat pump. The conditions are strict: Ofgem

  • The system must be installed and commissioned by an installer certified by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS). Ofgem
  • It must be sized to meet the full space heating needs of the property and must replace a fossil fuel or electric heating system. Ofgem
  • Non-residential buildings cannot claim the grant for air to air systems, and new builds and social housing are generally excluded. Ofgem

In plain terms, the grant suits a whole home heating project. It is not for adding one bedroom unit for summer. Ask us when you enquire and we will tell you honestly whether your project is likely to qualify. You can read the full rules on the Ofgem Boiler Upgrade Scheme page.

VAT on your installation

Until 31 March 2027, there is 0% VAT on the installation of energy saving materials in homes, and that includes heat pumps. Whether your system qualifies depends on what is fitted and how it is used. Ask for the VAT to be shown clearly on your quote so you can compare like for like. Commercial installs are charged at the standard rate. Ofgem

Planning permission

This is good news for most homeowners. Since 29 May 2025, the permitted development rules in England allow air source heat pumps that also cool, which brings air to air systems into scope. The same update dropped the old rule about keeping units one metre from the boundary and raised the size limit to 1.5 cubic metres. The unit must still be able to heat, not only cool. New Permitted Development rules in England: air source heat pump installations must now comply with MCS 020 a) – MCS +2

There are exceptions. Listed buildings need consent. In a conservation area or World Heritage Site, the unit cannot go on a wall or roof that fronts a highway. The City of Bath is a World Heritage Site, so this matters for many Bath homes. We check this for you at survey stage. If you are weighing up the options, our post on air conditioning vs heat pumps is a useful read. Reonic

F-Gas certification

GOV.UK guidance is clear that anyone working on equipment containing F gas must hold their own qualifications, and working without them is against the law. Companies that install or service these systems for others also need company certification. GOV.UKgov

Our engineers hold the relevant industry qualifications, including F-Gas certification for the safe handling of refrigerants. A cheap quote from someone without it is not a saving. It can leave you with a system that is unsafe, illegal and not covered by the maker’s warranty. Our guide on how to choose the right air conditioning installer lists the checks worth making.

Running Costs After Your Air Conditioning Installation

The install price is only half the picture. Running costs matter too. From 1 October to 31 December 2026, the Ofgem price cap puts the average electricity unit rate at 26.32p per kWh for Direct Debit customers. Using that rate, here is what common unit sizes cost per hour at full power: Ofgem

Unit sizeApprox. power drawn at full outputCost per hour at 26.32p per kWh
2.5 kW0.65 kWAbout 17p
3.5 kW1.0 kWAbout 26p
5 kW1.5 kWAbout 39p

Modern inverter systems ease off once the room reaches the set temperature, so real world costs are often lower than this. For more on bills, see how air conditioning can save you money and is air conditioning worth it in the UK in 2026.

It is also worth budgeting for a yearly service. Air conditioning maintenance keeps the system efficient and protects your warranty. You can read more in the benefits of regular air conditioner servicing. If something does go wrong, our air conditioning repair team can help.

Step by Step: How to Get an Accurate Air Conditioning Installation Cost

  1. Decide which rooms matter most. Start with the rooms that get too hot or too cold. You can always add more later.
  2. Measure each room. A rough length and width is enough for a first chat.
  3. Take a few photos. Include the inside walls, the outside wall, and any space where an outdoor unit could sit.
  4. Check your property status. Find out if your home is listed, in a conservation area, or leasehold.
  5. Get in touch. Send us your postcode, room details, photos and ideal timescale through our contact page.
  6. Book your free survey. We look at unit positions, pipe routes, outdoor space and electrics, and talk through how you plan to use the system.
  7. Compare your written quote line by line. Check the brand, model, what is included, warranty and VAT.
  8. Pick your install date. A simple single room job can often be finished within a day.

How to Keep Your Air Conditioning Installation Cost Down

  • Keep pipe runs short. Placing the indoor unit on or near an outside wall cuts labour and materials.
  • Think about a multi split. If you know you want three rooms done, one outdoor unit can be cheaper than three.
  • Book outside the summer rush. Autumn and winter diaries are quieter, and you get the heating benefit straight away.
  • Do not oversize. A correctly sized unit costs less to buy and less to run.
  • Do all your rooms in one visit. Coming back later means paying for set up twice.
  • Ask about grants and VAT early. They can change which system makes sense.
  • Avoid false savings. Portable units and unqualified fitters look cheap, but cost more in the long run.

Air Conditioning Installation Cost FAQs

How much does air conditioning installation cost for one room?

For one room, most published guides put the air conditioning installation cost between £1,500 and £3,000 fitted. The final figure depends on the room size, the brand you pick and how far the pipework has to run.

What is the average air conditioning installation cost in Bristol?

Checkatrade’s Bristol listing gives an average of about £2,033, with most jobs falling between £1,472 and £2,833. Treat this as a guide for a simple install. See our air conditioning services in Bristol page, which also covers Warmley and Downend.

Does air conditioning installation cost more in an older Bath property?

It can do. Thick stone walls, limited outdoor unit positions and heritage rules can mean longer pipe runs and more labour. A survey will show the simplest route and keep the cost as low as possible.

Is there a grant to help with the cost of air conditioning?

Yes, in some cases. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers £2,500 towards an air to air heat pump in a home, but only if an MCS certified installer fits it, it heats the whole property and it replaces fossil fuel or electric heating.

Do I pay VAT on air conditioning installation?

Heat pump installations in homes can qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Whether your system qualifies depends on what is fitted and how it is used, so ask for VAT to be shown clearly on your quote. Commercial work is charged at the standard rate.

Do I need planning permission for air conditioning?

Most homes in England do not, as long as the system can heat as well as cool and meets the size and noise limits. Listed buildings need consent, and extra limits apply in conservation areas and World Heritage Sites such as Bath.

How long does air conditioning installation take?

A simple single room installation may be completed within a day. Larger multi room or commercial systems take longer. We explain the expected schedule before any work begins.

How much does air conditioning cost to run after installation?

At the October 2026 price cap rate of 26.32p per kWh, a typical 2.5 kW bedroom unit costs about 17p an hour at full power. Inverter systems use less once the room is at temperature.

Is the survey and quote free?

Yes. We offer a free, no obligation quotation for homes and businesses. You can find more answers on our air conditioning FAQs page.

Does commercial air conditioning installation cost more than domestic?

Usually, yes. Commercial spaces are bigger, hold more people and equipment, and often need ceiling or ducted units. Work may also be staged around opening hours. Every commercial job is priced after a site survey.
